Husband/Wife Team Open New Restaurant in Deerfield
TeddyFabz Offers Up Just Fabulous Food!
Deerfield, IL (March 13, 2009) Teddy Spears and his wife Cynthia had always imagined working side-by-side one day. Before opening TeddyFabz in October 2008, Teddy, a native of Glenview, spent 18 years working in the family business (Mellos Peanut Company in Chicago). Cynthia, who grew up in Los Angeles, spent 10 years working for Disney, followed by 5 years working for DreamWorks Studios in their International Casting Department. The two met in 2004 at the singles table of a 600-person Greek wedding, and the rest, as they say, is history!
From the time that we met, Cynthia and I knew we would work together and had hoped to open a restaurant of our own, says Teddy, who has always enjoyed cooking for family and friends. Although I didnt have any restaurant experience, Cynthia grew up in the business, he adds. Her father opened his first restaurant 30 years ago in California and she spent a lot of time in the kitchen watching him work. She definitely knew the makings of a successful restaurant.
After the birth of their son, two and a half years ago, they began giving serious thought to their own restaurant concept. Cynthia and I love entertaining in our home and cooking together for our guests, he says. When we started thinking about opening TeddyFabz, we both agreed that we wanted it to be an extension of our home, our family, and our warm hospitality, he adds. In addition to offering a great menu, it was important to us that people should feel comfortable the minute they walk in. Based on what our customers have been saying, weve succeeded!
The TeddyFabz tagline is Just Fabulous Food, and Teddy and Cynthia live up to their promise. Every single item is made to order, with family recipes passed down from Cynthias father (several recipes, used 30+ years ago, are posted in the TeddyFabz prep kitchen, in her dads handwriting!) From charbroiled burgers, gyros and Chicago-style hot dogs, to sandwiches, salads and wraps, Teddy and Cynthia take great pride in their food quality, their prompt and friendly service, and affordable family-friendly price points - which range from $2.39 for a Vienna hot dog to $6.99 for a BBQ Chicken Chopped Salad. Kids meals are also available for $3.99 and include a fountain drink and an order of French fries.
In addition, many items are made from scratch by Cynthia herself including a very popular beef chili, an all-white tuna salad, a variety of salad dressings and special sauces for the burgers. Cynthias California influence can be found in the Frisco burger, a west coast classic topped with Swiss cheese, hickory smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato and her homemade Thousand Island salad dressing. She also makes a decadent chocolate cake that customers have been raving about!
But most unique to TeddyFabz are its signature side dishes including sweet potato fries served with Ranch dressing, homemade onion rings and zucchini sticks (made from tried and true family recipes, passed down from one generation to the next), and their homemade fried pickles served with apricot chipotle sauce (a taste sensation like no other!) We must sell hundreds of fried pickles each day, says Teddy. We really didnt expect such an enthusiastic response, but are grateful that people are willing to try them!
The restaurant seats 120 people and is best described as cozy, warm and inviting, with a fireplace in the center and large flat screen televisions for all to view. Customers place their order at the counter, a number is given, and the food is brought to the table within minutes. Teddy spends most of his time welcoming guests and taking food orders, while Cynthia (who is expecting their second son in April) oversees the kitchen. Its a true family-run business, says Teddy. Cynthia and I could not be happier!
TeddyFabz is open Monday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. They are closed on Sunday so that they, and their staff members, can spend a weekend day with their families. Cynthia and I are very family oriented, and our staff is, too, says Teddy. We know that very few restaurants are closed on Sunday, but we felt it was important to give our restaurant family a full day off to enjoy and relax.
TeddyFabz has a drive-thru, which is open during the same hours as the restaurant. They also welcome orders via FAX (847-498-5757). Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover are all accepted. Teddy and Cynthia hope to offer catering service starting this summer (as well as outdoor seating!) The restaurant is available for private parties and special events.
